Medicare Plan F vs Plan G in Utah

Undeniably, the most popular Medicare supplement plans in Utah are Plan F and Plan G.  A Medicare supplement (also known as Medigap) is a health insurance plan that helps pay what original Medicare does not pay.  Let’s talk about Medicare plan F vs Plan G in Utah and see which one is right for you.

Medicare supplement plan F in Utah has probably been the most popular plan for a really long time. Although plan G is catching up, I still think more people have plan F in Utah than any other plan.

So what is the difference between Plan F and Plan G in Utah?

Plan F pretty much covers everything original Medicare doesn’t cover.

See the table on Medicare’s website here.

Because plan F picks up the tab for what the original Medicare doesn’t, it is very popular among people that don’t want to deal with any kind out-of-pocket medical bill.  Plan F is the “Cadillac” of medicare supplements (or Mercedes, or Porsche, or what every you think is the best car).

Plan G is almost as good as plan F, but plan G does not cover the part B deductible, which in 2020 is $198.

See medicare supplement table.

So, if you go with plan G, you are responsible for the part B deductible each year.  Once you reach your deductible of $198, then your plan will pay 100% of everything else just like plan F.

Example

Here is an example of hitting your part B deductible.  Part B covers things like doctor visits so we will use that in our example.

Let’s say you have plan G and you go to your doctors office at the first of the year.  Let’s say the total bill is $100.  You would pay that $100 out-of-pocket because you haven’t hit your deductible of $198 yet.  Let’s say your next visit is the same and it’s a total bill of $100.  Well, you have already paid $100, so you would pay the rest of your deductible which would be $98.  Now, you have hit your deductible and you won’t have anymore out-of-pocket medical expenses the rest of the year.

Why go with plan G?

The reason to go with Plan G in Utah is because of the premium savings.  If you save more than $198 a year in premiums going with plan G, then it makes sense.

We save our clients on average of about $500 to $1,000 per year in premium savings by switching to plan G.  In those cases, it’s a no-brainer. If you don’t save more than $198 by going with plan G, then it doesn’t make sense to switch from plan F.

Why go with Plan F?

Some people would rather pay a little more premium, so they don’t have to deal with the part B deductible.  If this is you, then plan F would be your plan. My biggest advice to those that have had plan F for a long time is, shop plan F and G and see what the difference is.
