When Should I Sign Up For Medicare In Utah
When Should You Sign Up for Medicare in Utah?
If you’re turning 65, one of the most common questions I get is:
When should I sign up for Medicare in Utah?
For the most part, it’s the same as all other states, but the answer depends on your situation.
If You’re Turning 65 and Not Covered With Employer Coverage
The vast majority of people should enroll during what is called their Initial Enrollment Period (IEP).
Your IEP:
-
Starts 3 months before your 65th birthday
-
Includes your birthday month
-
Ends 3 months after your birthday
That’s a 7-month window to enroll without penalties.
If you miss it, you could face lifetime penalties.
Your Medicare will start the first day of your birth month. The best thing to do is sign up for Medicare A & B about 2-3 months before your birth month. That way you will have plenty of time to pick either a supplement plan and drug plan or an advantage plan.
If You’re Still Working at 65 and Covered with Employer Coverage
If you have employer coverage from a company with 20 or more employees, you may be able to delay Medicare Part B without penalty.
When you retire or lose employer coverage, you’ll qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, which allows you to enroll without penalties.
However, if your employer has fewer than 20 employees, Medicare will be your primary insurance at 65, and you may need to enroll right away.
If You’re Already Collecting Social Security
If you’re receiving Social Security benefits before 65, you’ll be automatically enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B. You should receive you Medicare card in the mail about 3 months prior to your birth month.

The Bottom Line
The right time to sign up for Medicare in Utah depends on:
-
Whether you’re working or not and you have employer coverage
-
The size of your employer (needs to be 20+ people on the plan)
-
Whether you have creditable coverage
Signing up at the wrong time can lead to penalties or gaps in coverage, so it’s important to review your situation carefully.
