3 Pros and 3 Cons of Medicare Supplement Plans in Utah
Medicare supplement plans (also known as medigap plans) can be wonderful insurance to have if you have Medicare. I like to think of them as “Cadillac” plans. This year (2026) if you buy a medicare supplement plan G, your max out of pocket for anything medical is only $283 for the WHOLE YEAR! That is crazy good! Let’s talk about 3 pros and 3 cons of Medicare supplement plans in Utah.
Pro- Very little out of pocket medical expenses.
Pro- Go anywhere in Utah (or the country) that medicare is accepted. The vast majority of doctors and hospitals accept original Medicare in Utah.
Pro- Easy to budget for. Because you know exactly what your maximum out of pocket will be, it is easy to plan for and budget for.
Con- Premiums can be high. Unfortunately, premiums can get pretty high with medicare supplement plans. There are a lot of different factors that are pushing premiums higher and higher.
Con- Medicare supplements do not cover prescriptions (part D). You have to get your drug plan on its own. In 2026, Part D plans in Utah range anywhere from $0/month to over $100/month
Con- Medicare supplements do not cover dental, vision or hearing. If you want this type of coverage, you would have to buy a dental, vision, hearing supplement plan that could range anywhere from $30-60/month.
I’m a big fan of Medicare supplement plans. They provide fantastic coverage and are really nice to have. They aren’t for everyone and that is why it is extremely important to go over all the options when making decisions about your medicare.
